Crazy AI News Week, AI Use Cases, Gen AI for HR, More

Busy, Busy Week for Gen AI

There hasn’t been a week this packed with major generative AI news since mid-March 2023 (GPT 4, Claude and Midjourney 5 were launched, and Microsoft 365 Copilot was announced, all just one day apart).

In fact, there’s so much news this week it’s not practical to do our typical format of “Top Byte of the Week” followed by “smaller” stories. Instead, this week, you’re getting a breakdown of all the most important news from this week below, with bold highlights (as always) so you can scan-read. (Followed by some great HR-specific AI resources and more.)

However, before we get to that, I have a special request for you: We really want to know how you are using Generative AI  -- in your business or just in life. What practical use cases have you found? How is generative AI making a difference in your business, or even if you haven’t figured it out yet, where are you starting? Where do you anticipate it will make the most impact?  There’s a real need for understanding around practical use cases for generative AI, and we’d like this newsletter to be a conduit for that. We’d love to hear your thoughts on this – please reach out to [email protected] (and yes, you can remain anonymous!)

And with that, here’s this week’s top generative AI news:

  •  GPT access finally rolled out for all ChatGPT Plus users this week. If you’re not familiar with GPTs, it’s an easy way for users to add parameters and narrow ChatGPT to a specific task. So you can, for example, “train” it to write your company’s marketing materials in a specific way, or pre-program a mini-chatbot that can be accessed directly within ChatGPTs. GPTs can be kept private, shared via a link, shared company-wide (if you have an enterprise account) or for the general public (OpenAI says it will release a marketplace soon, and is even talking about a revenue-share plan). Get more info on GPTs here, see some examples via these links, and you can  also try making one yourself very easily by just going to the new Explore button on the top left-hand side of your ChatGPT Plus window (you can make one in just a few minutes, no code needed).

  • The popularity of this rollout helped contributed to ChatGPT performance issues, leading OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to announce a moratorium on new paid ChatGPT Plus subscriptions on Tuesday (read his tweet here). There are reports some people are trying to sell their existing paid accounts to those who can’t currently get one.

  • Speaking of GPTs, coincidentally (or not?) this week Amazon announced PartyRock, its answer to GPTs (or what some people are now calling LLM apps), where you can modify Claude or other LLM models (and one assumes, in the future, AWS’ recently announced LLM Olympus) to create custom “apps,” just like with GPTs.  Try out PartyRock for free here.

  • You can now also can do something similar in Copilot, via Microsoft’s newly announced Copilot studio.

  • You know it’s a crazy AI news week when Microsoft’s plans to launch a new AI chip is the fifth-highest news story on this list.

  • A lot of generative AI news came out of Microsoft’s Ignite show this week: Read a summary of the keynote annos here, but  the other biggest highlight is CEO Satya Nadella saying “Microsoft is the Copilot company.”  Now that’s all in!

  • For a detailed breakdown on all the various Copilots Microsoft is offering, go here (there’s now even a med tech one!)

  • Microsoft is doing so much AI, it’s actually having to look to Oracle for additional computing support.

  • Finally this week, I don’t generally mention new tools here, because many of them are vaporware, but this free one that launched this week for instant, interactive whiteboarding is pretty amazing (but even the creators say its insecure, so don’t put your ChatGPT API key in it!)

Quote of the Week

"As we explore the use of AI, we must constantly communicate and reaffirm that these tools are not being used to replace but to supplement and help employees."
